Better rainfall in Mangaluru than last year, Puttur still deficit

Mangaluru, June 25, 2016:Mangaluru is receiving full fledged monsoons after many years. It has also finally breached last year’s cumulative rainfall figures for June month by 22mm.

Last year, 2015,  till June 23,  district received 548 mm, this year it has been 570 mm so far. But it is nowhere near the average for the month which is at 941 mm. But with six days to go, the rainfall statistics may change. Also missing the mark is total rainfall figures since the beginning of the year till June 24. While the five taluks of the district received 723 mm this year, last year it was 835 mm. The normal rainfall figures for the district from January to June months are 1,176 mm.

This month only on June 21 and 23, the total rainfall received by five taluks exceeded last June average. While June 21 this year received 50mm of rainfall, last year June during the same day it was 35 mm. On June 23 this year the district received 71mm of rainfall, last year June during the same day it was 40 mm.

On Friday till 8am, the district received 45mm of rainfall, which is 12mm more than what district received last year on the same day. While Mangaluru taluk received the highest rainfall at 56mm, Puttur taluk received the least at 34mm. Belthangady received 41mm, Sullia (41mm) and Bantwal taluk received 53 mm of rainfall.

Among the taluks only Mangalore taluk has received 30% excess amount of rainfall this month compared to last year. While this year the rainfall till June 24 is 787mm, last year it was 494 mm.

This is also reflected in total rainfall figures since the beginning of the year till June 24 for Mangaluru taluk. While Mangaluru taluk received 916mm of rainfall from January to June 24 this year, last year the rainfall in the same period was 685mm. Whereas Puttur taluk has received the least 596mm of rainfall from January to June 24 this year, last year the rainfall in the same period was 943 mm.
