Vittal Malekudiya was arrested  by the ANF on March 3, 2012 after police alleged that they have evidences to prove that he had links with Naxals. The issue had even led to several protests by the CPI(M) and various other organisations.  Four months later, upon  his release, Vittal had continued his education and was also actively involved in various pro-people movements.

The Bantwal ASP had in January filed a charge sheet against Vittal in the Belthangady court, leading to  more protests. Amid this development, Vittal is contesting the Gram Panchayat elections.

DYFI State President Muneer Katipalla, CPI(M) leaders BM Bhat, Shivakumar, Haridas and others were present while Vittal filed his nomination.
