The Minister was speaking at a function at Dr. Shivaram Karanth Pilikula Nisargadhma where he inaugurated infrastructure facilities. He added that a proposal sent by the district administration was before him. He would approve it within three days.

The Minister said that the State has requested the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change to relax guidelines pertaining to building new structures under costal regulatory zone (CRZ) for promoting beach tourism in 42 beaches in the State from Karwar to Talapady. The ban limit on building structures from high water mark to the coast is not uniform. It varied from 90 m to 250 m.

Asked how confident the Minister was on getting approval for it, he said: “We will get it. It needs to be done, people are keen to see it is done.”

He said that the government also wants to promote “open street” concept in tier II cities such as Mangaluru and Mysuru.  The Minister directed DK DC Adoor.B. Ibrahim to organise “open street” in Mangaluru, without affecting traffic.

He said that 250 more home guards with “Tourist Mitra” logo will be deployed at select tourist destinations in the State in addition to 175 home guards deployed in 13 districts. There were 319 identified tourist destinations in the State. The home guards are trained in security and are deployed to maintain law and order under the supervision of local police.

Minister Deshpande said that some corporate houses have adopted tourist places such as Belur and Srirangapatna for maintaining cleanliness, providing drinking water facilities and building small roads there.

He said that tourism spots in the State have not flourished mainly due to lack of infrastructure, including wash rooms, lack of cleanliness and security. Earlier, he inaugurated the entrance plaza at Nisargadhama.
