Bantwal, April 24, 2020: The cremation of the 75 year old woman from Bantwal, the second to die of Covid-19 in Dakshina Kannada district was held at the Hindu crematorium at Kaikunje near the BC Road Railway Station at around 2 am on Friday, amid tight police security in the wake of the huge opposition by locals against cremation in the area.
Initially, social media was agog with rumours that the last rites would be held at Pachanady. Soon after, a large number of people had gathered there and even MLA Dr Bharath Shety who was present there said the cremation cannot take place without the consent of locals. Following these officials decided to shift the body to Kaikunje where too there was opposition. Still, the police managed to disperse the crowd and the cremation was done at around 2 am.
The officials had wanted the cremation to be done at the Baddakatte Hindu crematorium close by the place of stay of the woman, but here too there was opposition.
