Mangaluru, Mar 03, 2018: A Transport Department official, who is already functioning as in-charge Senior Regional Transport Officer in Mangaluru, will also hold additional charge as Assistant RTO at the Assistant Regional Transport Office which is set for inauguration at Bantwal march 3, Saturday.

It is not just G.S. Hegde who will have additional charge. Nine staff, including an Inspector of Motor Vehicles, out of 42 working at Mangaluru RTO, too would be deputed to Bantwal.

The government has been opening new RTOs across the State and Bantwal is the latest in the series (with registration prefix KA 70) to provide better services to general public.

“What is the use of opening new offices without providing adequate manpower,” questioned a senior Transport Department official.

Deputing existing staff to newly-opened offices does not serve any purpose and will hamper work at the existing offices, the officer said. For example, more than 50% posts are vacant at Mangaluru RTO; deputing nine of them to Bantwal would mean work at Mangaluru will suffer, he said.

Of the 10 IMVs working at Mangaluru RTO, two would have to do check-post duty (Talapady) and one has to go to the short-staffed Puttur RTO every day leaving just seven inspectors to do a host of duties, including registering new vehicles, conducting tests for Learner’s Licence, Driving Licence and vehicle fitness; attending accident spots and courts; arranging vehicles for visiting VIPs etc.

While Mangaluru RTO has 6.25 lakh vehicles registered in its jurisdiction, which comprises Mangaluru and Bantwal taluks, about 95,000 vehicles will be moved to Bantwal ARTO jurisdiction after its opening. The Bantwal ARTO will have jurisdiction over Belthangady taluk, which hitherto was under Puttur RTO besides Bantwal taluk.

The other functional RTO in Dakshina Kannada, which has jurisdiction over Puttur and Sullia, has a Regional Transport Officer and one Senior IMV.
