Bantwal: Man on the run for 13-years finally arrested

Bantwal: September 17, 2015: Long arms of the law caught up with Shivanna alias Puttayya, 58, when DK district police re-arrested him in connection with a case registered against him in Bantwal rural police station. Shivanna, arrested by then Bantwal rural PSI K U Beliappa on March 17, 2002 while attempting to smuggle sandalwood billets in a car KA-05 M-1325, had skipped subsequent court appearances in this connection. The court treated this as a long pending case.

Barring a solitary court appearance on June 21, 2003 in connection with the case, Shivanna had not appeared for the hearing. The court subsequently on May 31, 2015 issued a long pending case warrant 05/2015 against him in connection with the case 298/02 registered in Bantwal rural PS earlier. Police had recovered 55 billets of sandalwood in the car at Badagundi, Navoor village in Bantwal taluk and seized the sandalwood, car and Rs 5,000 in cash from Shivanna.

Armed with the LPC warrant, police head constable Lokesh and police constable Mohan went to Shivanna’s last known address at Varkat village, B H Kaimara Post, N R Pura taluk in Chikkamagaluru district on September 8 only to find the house locked. Inquiries with neighbours revealed that Shivanna was not residing there for quite some time. Not dissuaded by this, the policemen kept in continuous contact with their local informants there.

Based on inputs from contacts and their own intelligence, Lokesh and Mohan zeroed in on Shivanna at N R Pura in Chikkamagaluru taluk on Tuesday and arrested him. He was subsequently produced before the additional chief judicial (junior division) and judicial magistrate first class court in Bantwal. The judge remanded him to judicial custody up to September 30. SP Sharanappa SD commending their work, announced a cash award and commendation letter.
