Band from M’lore rock band selected for national Saarang 2015 at Chennai

Mangalore, Oct 22, 2014:  “Avalanche,” a budding rock band from Mangalore was selected for the national annual cultural event Saarang - 2015, hosted by IIT, Madras.  For the first time ever, the organisers of Saarang, the famous social and cultural festival of Chennai, organised the regional prelims of ‘Decibels,’ the western music band hunt in Mangalore, to select the best semi-professional band from the city.

Thanks to the slow yet steady spurting of rock bands in Mangalore, team Saarang choose to organise one of its regional prelims in Mangalore, along with other cities including Bangalore, Kochi, Pune and Hyderabad. The ‘Band Hunt’ event was organised at G6 Music Cafe at Valencia recently. Even as it rained heavily outside, the rock music lovers of the city, got an opportunity to savour the heavy metallic performance of five budding semi-professional bands from Mangalore and Manipal, all  on one stage. The bands - “The Undecided” from Manipal, “Induced Deception” from Mangalore, “Mount and Do” from NITK, “Duck Food” from NITK, “Avalanche Breakdown” from Mangalore and “Rock Paper Scizzors” from Coimbatore performed their best to make it to the national event.

Speaking to media , ‘Decibels’ Publicity and Marketing Head, a fourth year engineering student at IIT Madras Vikshak Raj Prakash said that the Saarang team decided to organise regional prelims in Mangalore as there have been quite a good number of rock bands in the city. “Though only six teams participated in the contest, we are happy that they have turned up and a band from this region can compete on the national stage,” he said. This was the first prelims of the event and next will be at Bangalore.

“Avalanche” team will get to perform in Chennai between January 7 and 11, during the five -day festival, in which over 50,000 students from various colleges of South India will participate - it is indeed a step forward for Mangaloreans.
