Speaking to media on Aug 23, Tuesday, GM  Ravi said BSNL has already provided public Wi-Fi facility on smaller scales, including the one at NIT-K campus at Srinivasanagar near Surathkal. GM  Ravi said, “We are selecting areas where data usage is high, especially educational institutions.”

GM Ravi said though BSNL is yet to announce the tariff for Wi-Fi facility, it should be highly competitive. He said after the 15-minute free usage offered to a customer, attractively priced data packs would be made available. The speeds should be faster to what is available under 4G networks, he claimed.

Meanwhile, DKTD is in the process of installing about 250 new cell sites or BTS, base transceiver stations across the two revenue districts to strengthen the 3G network. Already 160 such BTS are made functional and the remaining should be in place shortly. DKTD is also covering a few dark spots in cellular connectivity in far-flung areas of the telecom district.
