In a press release issued here on Friday, the Bharatiya Janata Party, which is the Opposition party in Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC), said that the ruling Congress party had promised in its manifesto during the last election to the civic body that it would not increase property tax for five years.

Burden on people

But now it had increased the property tax by 15 per cent. The people of the city would have to bear the burden of this tax.

Besides, the increase in the property tax had been made applicable retrospectively for the years 2013, 2014 and 2015, the Bharatiya Janata Party said in the release.

The City Municipal Council had taken this decision despite the fact that it was opposed by the Bharatiya Janata Party .

The increase in the property tax was a betrayal of the mandate of the people by the Congress party, the release added.
