Bengaluru, May 16, 2018 : A day after Karnataka delivered a hung Assembly on Tuesday with no party getting a clear majority to form government in the state, all the parties - BJP, Congress and JDS - paced up the race to Vidhan Soudha. All the parties held legislative party meetings. While the BJP elected BS Yeddyurappa as its leader, the JDS chose HD Kumaraswamy. Yeddyurappa met Karnataka Governor after being chosen legislative party leader. He said that the Governor had assured him of taking an appropriate decision over government formation in the state at the earliest. News agency ANI reported that two JDS and 12 Congress leaders skipped legislatve party meets, even as the parties accused the BJP of resorting to poaching.

While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the single-largest party, winning 104 seats, the Congress and the Janata Dal Secular stood second and third with wins on 78 and 38 seats respectively. Even before full results could come in, intense political parley began with the Congress and the JDS declaring that they would jointly form the government in Karnataka. However, the single largest party refused to budge, and ultimately both the sides met Governor Vajubhai Vala and staked claims to form the government.

Karnataka caretaker chief minister Siddaramaiah claimed that no Congress MLA is missing, with the party saying that it has a plan to safeguard all lawmakers. Congress MLA Amaregouda Linganagouda Patil Bayyapur has said that he has been approached by the BJP and even offered a ministerial berth. JDS leader Danish Ali has also targeted the BJP saying that if the Governor does not invite the JDS-Congress alliance to form government, it would be death of democracy.

He thinks he is the boss of the party, the party has suffered because of his arrogant behaviour. He is not a true Congressman. Many people have this view of him but don’t express it, says KB Koliwad, outgoing Karnataka Assembly Speaker and Congress leader on Siddaramaiah.

BJP MPs Shobha Karandlaje, GM Siddeshwara and PC Mohan write to Home Minister Rajnath Singh stating, "we have every reason to believe that Karnataka government is misusing its power and tapping our mobile phones. This is a clear violation of our fundamental right to privacy."
