BIT students build a car for common man

Mangaluru, May 20, 2015:  Briefing media, Prof Rounaq Ahamed stated that  to encourage the ’Aam Admi’ (Common man) towards having  an economic and affordable four wheeler car,  four students of  BIT - Bearys Institute of Technology,  developed a two-seat car fitted with the engine of a motor bike and has a total weight of 280 kgs.

He added that the car has been developed fitted with a motor  bike engine and other bike components and available accessories.  The aim is a utility vehicle for common man. The car gives a mileage of 32 kmph and maximum speed of 80 kmph.  Stating that it is set to be the cheapest of all available cars in market  fabricated at a cost price of Rs 50,000. Prof Ahamed said the car can be used by workers, students and general public in the place of a bike for Mangaluru’s unpredictable weather condition. A demonstration drive has been carried out from Thokkottu to the BITS campus.

BITS Campus Director Dr Sainath said a person who does not know to drive a car, can drive this compact vehicle. The students who developed it are eighth semester mechanical engineering students Safwan, Samnan, M C Mohammed Suhail and Mohammed Adil.  It took 25 days to assemble the compact car and six days for its basic design.  The students explained that an engine of Pulser bike was used. First we purchased the bike and started research on hybrid engine. To make a light weight and affordable car, we designed this two seater car.

Meanwhile, supersonic Aerodynamics Research laboratory was inaugurated by NITK Director Prof Swapan Bhattacharya, at BITS on May 16.  The lab is second laboratory in Karnataka. Already two research students are working at the lab on their PhD.
