Awareness in pilot wards for waste collection

Mangaluru, April 02, 2015:  MCC Commissioner Hephsiba Rani Korlapati said teams comprising of MCC staff and MPW headed by section heads have made door to door visit in pilot wards informing citizens about source segregation. 

Mangalore City Corporation has taken an initiative to promote the concept of source segregation of wastes for effective municipal solid waste management from April 1. In this regard, MCC has identified about 15  pilot wards to understand, analyse the field reality and plan for all the 60 wards of corporation.  About 3,000 waste generators are planned to be covered in this pilot project.  Pamphlets have been distributed along with pasting stickers on the doors of waste generators to mark the teams house visit.

The pilot wards selected are Court, Derebail South, Mannagudda, Kambla, Kodialbail and Bejai. In Court ward, the entire ward will be covered.   Ladyhill first to fifth cross will be included in the Derebail South ward, Ladyhill Circle via sixth to eighth cross till Mannagudda gurji will be covered in Mannagudda ward, Ballalbagh junction via Bbhagwathinagara to Pragathi service station in Kambla ward, beside KSRTC bus stand till Sri Devi College in Kodialbail ward and KMC College road to KMC boys hostel and Anegundi main road to Anegundi bridge in Bejai ward.

Wet waste will be collected six days in a week excepting Wednesday. Dry waste recyclables will be collected in every Wednesday.  The collected waste will be transported for recycling by plastic manufacturers association. Sanitary napkins will be collected on all the days in a week. The collected sanitary napkins will be transported and treated by M/s Ramky Enviro Engineers at the Common Biomedical waste treatment facility located at Mulki.

The sanitary napkins should be wrapped in paper/plastic carry-bags before handing it over to the garbage collectors. Biomedical wastes like expired medicines, cotton smeared with blood, used syringes, etc will be collected on Wednesday and will be transported to the treatment facility at Mulki.
