Auto rickshaw drivers demand fare hike

Mangalore, July 12, 2011 : The DK District Auto Rickshaw Drives’ Union Committee, the DK District Auto Rickshaw Drivers’ Association, Janatha Auto Rickshaw and Vehicle Drivers’ Union, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike Rickshaw Unit, Suratkal Auto Rickshaw Drivers and Owners’ Association, Minorities Auto Rickshaw Driver and Owners’ Association, and Park Committee organized a protest rally from Hampankatta Circle to Nehru Maidan, during which they pushed their auto rickshaws on July 12 Tuesday. About 500 auto rickshaw drivers participated in the protest.

In his protest address, General Secretary B. Vishnumurthy said that the district administration must revise auto rickshaw meter charge since the central government has raised petrol prices from Rs. 50 to Rs 70 and the price of LPG from 30 percent to 40 percent.

Arun Kumar, the vice president of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike Rickshaw Unit, said that the insurance for auto rickshaws have increased from Rs. 3000 to Rs. 4000 and that the price of tires has doubled.

He also said that, although the association has urged Deputy Speaker Yogesh Bhat to provide spacious auto parks, it has still not been provided.

The associations also submitted a memorandum to DC N. S. Channappa Gowda.
