Udupi,April 4, 2017: As many as 13 persons have been arrested in connection with the complaint lodged by Udupi Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis alleging that there was an attempt on her life along with that of Assistant Commissioner Shilpa Nag when they had raided illegal sand extraction places at Kundapur taluk on the night of April 2,Sunday.
Six of those arrested are from Halnad while seven others are from Kandlur. The DC had first raided the sand extraction unit at Halnad followed by a raid at Kandlur. However, it has been gathered that the Kandlur sand extractors had prior information and it was owing to this that they were all set to attack the raiding team.
Several organisations back DC : In the meantime, the incident has brought in support for the Deputy Commissioner from various organisations including Karmika Vedike, Udupi Lorry Owners Association, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike and others. Leaders of all the organisations have met the SP and have sought strict action against illegal sand mining in the district.
