Attavar attack was pre-planned: Top cop of Karnataka police

Mangaluru: September 7, 2015: The top brass of Karnataka state police is worried about the law and order situation in two policing units in Dakshina Kannada - District police and Mangaluru City Police.

 

This is evident from a detailed review undertaken by Alok Mohan, additional director-general of police (law and order) about the prevalent situation in the district for two days over the weekend ahead of the impending visit by home minister K J George to Dakshina Kannada district on Monday.

While Mohan dismissed the timing of his review and the scheduled visit of George to DK as a mere coincidence, the senior officer who recently vested with law and order responsibility in the state said he was on a routine familiarization visit to keep self abreast of the issues.

"I reviewed the law and order situation in DK. I am concerned about the situation in the district," he said.

Mohan earlier served as an IGP (Western Range).

Acknowledging that the recent Attavar incident where vigilantes strove to impose their views on a man from a minority community after being found in the company of a woman from another community was deliberated in detail, Mohan said, "We must strive to maintain public order at all times.The situation in the city and the district is not only a challenge for the police department but for the society as a whole."

He added that the focus is now on ensuring better flow of information.

Contrary to the popular belief that such incidents take place at Attavar on the spur of the moment, Mohan said, "It requires at least a day’s planning." It is in this context that Mohan has directed police officials to have a better network of information so that any such incident is prevented rather than acted up on. At the same time, Mohan has also directed the police to better their response time to any such incidents and deal with the perpetrators harshly.

Incidentally, city police chief S Murugan, giving details of action taken on the Attavar incident, had asserted that city police had prevented at least ten such incidents.

He mentioned that the responde of police to the incident was minimal from the time it was reported and that police had apprehended the perpetrators - 14 as of now - in the shortest possible time. Mohan also reiterated that the thrust will be to send a deterrent message to such anti-social elements.

New police station

Home minister K J George will tour DK district on Monday. He will inaugurate the newly constructed police station and fire station in Sullia. He will visit the house of former KPCC secretary late Mohammad Badruddin at Brahmarakootlu at 1pm. The minister will also hold a review meeting on the law and order situation in the district at the office of IGP (Western Range) in the city at 2.30pm before leaving for Bengaluru at 5.15pm.
