kalmakaruSullia, July 23, 2017: Residents of Shettykatta in Kalmakaru in Sullia taluk have warned of boycotting the next election, if a bridge is not built between Shettykatta and Mentikaje villages.

A stream separates the two villages in Kalmakaru area. In rainy season, the stream will be in full spate and the people construct a temporary footbridge with bamboo sticks to cross the stream.

The villagers living in 25 to 30 houses are isolated during heavy rain as the villages turn into islands. Everyone in the village, right from primary school students to elderly persons, depend on the footbridge. Even a moment’s distraction while crossing the stream on the footbridge may pose threat to their lives. So far, nothing has been done to construct a proper bridge, the villagers have complained.

In summer, the stream can be crossed easily and nobody worries about it. But, the problem appears during rainy season every year. "We get the same assurance during every election that a bridge will be built across the stream. But, all assurances have turned out to be false," the village is in distress.
