Mangalore, Oct 7, 2014: Asian Games gold and bronze medalist Poovamma got a grand reception at Mangalore on October 7. Minister for Forest, Environment and DK District in-charge Ramanath Rai, Minister for Youth Empowerment, Sports and Fisheries K Abhayachandra Jain, Deputy Commissioner AB Ibrahim and hundreds of people waited at the airport to welcome her.

Later Poovamma was taken in a procession in a open jeep, accompanied by her parents from Jyothi Circle through Hampankatta, KS Rao Road, MG Road and ended with felicitation at Mangala Stadium.

 

On the occasion Minister Abhayachandra Jain announced cash award of Rs 10 lakhs for athletes who won gold medals, Rs 7 lakhs for the silver medalists and Rs 5 to the bronze medalists.


The 24-year-old Poovamma won the gold medal with a record time in women’s 4 x 400 metres relay along with Tintu Luka, Mandeep Kaur and Priyanka Pawar at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea. She also won a brone medal in women’s 400m sprintof.
