Arrest of two accused in April’s school van driver assault case sparks tension in Ullal area

Mangaluru, Dec 2, 2015 : The arrest of two persons wanted by the Ullal police in connection with the assault on the driver of a private school   has sparked tension in Ullal area. The incident  of assault had taken place in front of a hospital in Tokkottu in April after the school van driver was accused of sexually harassing a minor girl  student of the school.

 Those accused of assaulting the driver are Sayyed Ummar Koya (25) and Asif (23)  hailing from Madoor. The duo has also been accused of  stoning the school bus and the police van in the disturbances that took place outside the Sahara Hospital at Tokkottu on April 13 this year  when the UKG student who was allegedly  sexually assaulted by the driver was taken there for medical tests. A crowd had also then tried to snatch cameras of media men and had forced the police to resort to a mild lathi charge.

The police had taken four persons into custody during the early hours of December 1, Tuesday, after raiding several houses. Meanwhile, SDPI activists gathered in front of the local police station accusing the cops of arresting innocents. Two of them namely Moidin U K and Imtiyaz were later released.

In another development, SDPI activists  gathered around the residence of Ullal Sayyed Madani Darga President  opposing  his silence  on the issue. The mob even pelted stones at a police vehicle which arrived at the place. The demand of the locals was that the Ullal Darga Chief UK Hamza must speak out on the issue wherein police had barged into several houses  when women and children were present.

Even a KSRP contingent arrived to  bring the situation under control. Though there has been no much harm, the situation continues to be tense and the police have provided security to the Darga President.
