Arrest of bus driver, conductor in assault case results in flash strike

Mangaluru, Aug 23, 2015: Buses operating on the Mangaluru-Eliyarpadavu route were off the roads on August 22 following a flash strike by the bus crew  in protest against the arrest of a bus driver and conductor by the Ullal Police in connection with an incident wherein a man who had opposed three men  sitting with  women on the front seat of a bus  was attacked.

The incident had taken place on August 21 when three bus crew  along with two women were seated  on the side seat right next to the driver’s seat in the Bayar bus operating on the Eliyarpadavu-Mangaluru route. Meanwhile, a traveller Naveen Kumar of Ambalamogaru complained to the conductor against the three bus crew alleging that they were harassing the women. Based on the complaint, the conductor asked the three men to vacate their seat and asked them to sit  on the back seat.

In retaliation, one among the three identified as Rizwan had attacked Naveen along with some others. Naveen had later lodged a complaint against  four persons namely  Imran, Ansar, Shareef, Rizwan and Ameer.
 The Police who swung into action arrested Junaid and Ansar, the driver and conductor respectively of Ashwini bus operating on the Mangaluru-Eliyarpadavu route.

This resulted in a flash  protest inconveniencing  bus  commuters to a great extent.


Based on the complaint, Ullal police then took into custody Ansar and Junaid, who work as conductor and driver respectively for ’Ashwini’ bus plying on Mangaluru-Eliyarpadavu route.

Following the police action, buses on this route held a flash strike, condemning the fact that police took the two into custody during their duty hours. Students, office-goers and the general public were put to much inconvenience.
