Arjuna Award recommendation: Golden Girl Poovamma elated

Mangaluru, Aug 12, 2015: Mangaluru’s Golden girl MR Poovamma is all smiles. She is extremely pleased to know that she is one among the 17 athletes whose names have been recommended for Arjuna Awards by a selection committee of the Sports Ministry.

She describes it as a ‘Dream come True’ for her. Poovamma who is presently undergoing training at NIS, Patiala says a recognition from the government is something every athlete would be proud of.

Poovamma has  won a gold in the 4x 400 meters relay  and a bronze in the 400 meters in the Incheon Asian Games last year.  

She also  earned a silver in the 400 meters race in the Asian Championships held at Wuhan in China in June.

Poovamma who hails from Kodagu and is pursuing her BBM in SDM College of Business Management in Mangaluru  has now set her eyes on the 2016 Rio Olympics and hopes to qualify for the same. She  will also be participating in the World Championships to be held in Beijing from August 22.
