Jaimala, Women and Child Development Minister, flagged off the fest by unfurling a flag with two fishes, the symbol of the Alupa dynasty which ruled Tulunadu.

She also inaugurated the 4-km heritage walk across temples and basadis in Barkur, aimed at informing the tourists about the rich heritage of Barkur. A procession was also inaugurated on the occasion. Colourful umbrellas, Kalladka dolls, folk dance teams and a ‘Huli Vesha’ team participated in the procession.

The procession, which began at Simhasanagudde, passed through the main streets and culminated at the fort grounds here.

A fruit and flower show was another attraction. An elephant, a Linga, two fishes, and a butterfly, made of roses and other flowers, caught the eyes of the visitors. An exhibition with various stalls was also held at the fort grounds. There was also a fireworks display at the venue to coincide with the inauguration.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Jaimala said that Barkur will be developed as a major tourist centre.

Tourism will also generate employment. Barkur was the third capital of the Alupa dynasty after Mangaluru and Udyavar. The Alupa dynasty had ruled Tulunadu for over 1,000 years. Efforts would be made to hold the Alupotsava every year, she said.
