Altamas Kabir, former Chief Justice of India, passes away

Kolkatta, Feb 19, 2017 : Former Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabir passed away in Kolkata on Sunday after brief illness. He was 68.

He was suffering from a kidney ailment was in a critical condition. The conformation of his demise came from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who tweeted saying "Bengal has lost a legal luminary."  “Condolences on the passing of former CJI  Altamas Kabir ji. My thoughts with his family/colleagues. India & Bengal have lost a legal luminary,” CM  Banerjee tweeted.


Justice Kabir was the Chief Justice at Supreme Court for a brief period of nine months in 2012-13. A stickler for discipline, procedures and rules, Justice Kabir had endeared himself to members of the Bar and the Bench with his humility.


Born on July 19, 1948, in Kolkata, Justice Kabir did his LLB and MA from University of Calcutta and was made a permanent judge of the Calcutta High Court on August 6, 1990.


He was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court on March 1, 2005 and elevated to the Supreme Court in September 2005.


During his tenure, Justice Kabir delivered several landmark judgments, particularly relating to human rights and election laws.


The president of India and many Govt leaders have condoled the passing away today.
