All-weather fisheries port at Kulai, sanctioned

Mangaluru, July 02 2018: Speaking to media here on July 1, Sunday,   Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said that the centre has approved an all-weather fisheries port at Kulai. A sum of Rs 196.51 crore has been released for the purpose.

The MP said that fishermen from Sasihithlu, Thokuru, Surathkal, Baikampady, Panambur, Thannirbavi and Chitrapura will benefit from the port. The NMPT will call for the tender after the monsoon.

Stating that the Ministry of Shipping will bear 50% of the project cost (Rs 98.25%) under the Sagarmala project, the MP said that the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying, and Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare will bear 45% (Rs 88.43 crore) of the cost and the state government will bear 5% of the project cost (Rs 9.83 crore).

Further, he said that the project will come up on an 11-acre land covering Hosabettu and Kulai. There are no houses in the project site and the land has already been handed over to the Central government.

The fisheries port will accommodate 325 boats and 300 traditional crafts and will have two auction yard, net repair shed, boat repair shed, and restrooms for fishermen. Once materialised, it will lessen the pressure on Mangaluru fisheries harbour and lessen the inconvenience and security risks at NMP. The project would give employment to about 2,500 local fishermen and employment to 1,700 people from shore-based establishments, distribution and marketing of fish, he explained.

Four-lane road  :  The four-lane work of the road from Kulshekar to Karkala has been approved and the notification for land acquisition will be issued in September. The tender will be invited in the first week of December. Under the project, Moodbidri and Gurpura will have a bypass.

He said that the Navayug construction company higher officials have been called for a meeting today July 2, Monday to discuss the delay in the four-lane work on NH 66. If they fail to adhere to the conditions of completing the work at the earliest, the MP, along with the residents, will go ahead with the decision to close down the toll plaza.
