Alevoor land used for dumpyard will be reclaimed : Udupi DC

Udupi, Nov 20, 2019:  Speaking after launching ‘Clean Bus stand-Udupi City Bus Stand’ campaign, organised by the Udupi City Bus Emergency Service Association, at City Bus Stand,  Udupi DC G Jagadeesha said November 19, Tuesday .   Land in Pragathinagara in Alevooru, being used as a dumpyard, will be scientifically reclaimed with the help of Bio-mining method .  “Land has been reclaimed scientifically under the Bio-mining project in Tamil Nadu and discussions with experts on Bio-mining project has been done.”

Udupi DC G Jagadeesha  said land being used as dumpyard in many cities in Tamil Nadu was retrieved with the help Bio-mining project. Bio-mining, is a method of laying organic waste in an open area and covering it with earth. The compost produced under this method is a soil-enricher and is given to farmers. Combustible waste such as plastic, paper and cloth materials would be sent to cement factories as reusable fuel.

“Non-combustible waste, mostly construction debris, will be used in landfill projects. Thus under this method land in Pragathinagar would be reclaimed,” he said and added that the project was estimated to cost over Rs 3 crore.

The funds for the project will be sought under Swachh Bharat Mission project and a detailed project report (DPR) will be prepared at the earliest and matters taken forward he stressed.

He said the district was all set to achieve milestones in the scientific disposal of waste. In coming days separate units for wet and dry wastes will be established. The solid waste generated in city and rural villages will be disposed scientifically. Thus land was identified for scientific disposal of waste in 40 gram panchayats. Fifty per cent of gram panchayats will receive land by th end of this month.

“Soon every gram panchayat will have land for disposal of waste,” DC stressed.

He appealed to the people to produce compost from wet waste and use it as manure for plants in their garden. Officials will be asked to set up compost unit in their houses. A meeting will be convened soon and flat owners associations, hotels, marriage halls will be asked to manage their huge waste,” he said and promised technical assistance to public on the scientific disposal of garbage.

He said a survey would be conducted to look into the contributions of departments in initiating the cleanliness drive. The good work will be rewarded. Association President Suresh Nayak Kuylady presided over the programme.
