Mangaluru, Dec 22, 2015: An incident wherein the presence of mind by a station master of the Padil station averted a major tragedy has come to light of late. The incident had taken place on December 20, Sunday evening.
The alert station manager had managed to stop the City Junction-Mumbai CST super fast train and New Delhi (Nizamuddin) Tiruvanathapuram super fast train which were moving on the same track in opposite direction thus averting a collision.
If the Mumbai CST Super Fast train had left the Mangaluru Junction Station coming under Southern Railways, the other train had left Thokur station coming under Konkan Railway. In fact the Padil station itself had given line clearance to the CST Super Fast train. But the work of attaching six more compartments was then not complete. But even after that the train had faced some technical snag.
Meanwhile, the train which arrived from Nizamuddin had sought signal following which the authorities cancelled the line clear signal of CST Train. As the Nizamuddin super fast train moved from Thokur, Padil officials somehow could not pass the message to the CST train that the clearance has been cancelled.
As the train had already moved ahead, the Padil station master, using his presence of mind, contacted the engine drivers of both the trains over Walkie Talkie and managed to stop the trains.
The incident resulted in disruption of rail traffic for nearly one and a half hours.
