Alarming rise in Malaria cases in undivided DK ; over 9000 cases in 2014

Mangaluru, Jan 23, 2015:  The alarming fact that the total number of Malaria cases in DK and Udupi districts in the year 2014 has been over 9000 was  presented before the inter-departmental coordination meeting on Malaria in the two districts held at the DC office here on January 22, Thursday.

Shockingly, the number of Malaria cases reported in the two districts account to more than of the total number of Malaria cases reported in the entire state. Particularly, the Plasmodium Falciparum malaria cases considered more serious, is high in the two districts.

Participating in the meeting, BG Prakash, Joint Director (Malaria and Filaria), said the total Malaria cases in DK which stood at 7025 in 2010 has increased to 8240 in 2014 while the number of cases in Udupi during the period stood at 1,528 and 1639 respectively.

In another shocking revelation the officer said 90 per cent of the Malaria cases of DK were reported from Mangaluru City Corporation limits.

He said  as part of vector control measures against malaria, bio-degradable and non-toxic insecticides will be used.
