Akshara Dasoha rice goes to hotels, shops: Lorry driver caught

Sullia, Dec 26, 2013: A lorry driver who was unauthorisedly selling the rice meant for Akshara Dasoha mid-day meal scheme, to hotels and shops was caught hold of by locals on December 25, Wednesday.

It is learnt, the accused namely Basavaraju (55) of Hubli origin who was transporting the rice from the Food Corporation godown in Mangalore to the godown at Arambur in Sullia was into this unlawful act since some time.


Acting on a tip off from locals,  Radhakrishna Parivarakana, former president of Aletti Gram Panchayat trapped the driver while he was unloading the rice to be supplied to a hotel at Gandhinagar in Sullia on Wednesday morning. The Block Education Officer was immediately informed and a police complaint lodged.

It is learnt, Basavaraju was working as a driver for a lorry owned by   a Bellare man since the past ten years. There is a suspicion of the presence of a larger racket of selling the Akshara Dasoha rice.
