Agri production must be improved with use of electronic technology

Mangaluru, Nov 02 2019: K Lakshminarayanan, joint director, Bankers Institute of Rural Development (BIRD), called for measures to increase the usage of Internet of Things (IoT), a technology, in agriculture.

“Farmers can get first-hand information on the internet regarding soil health, germination, water level and moisture content, among others. All these can be monitored to increase production and productivity,” he explained.

Addressing the gathering at the national-level conference on the role of institutional financing in the development of agriculture organised by Mangalore University.

Lakshminarayanan said that the use of IoT devices in agriculture can help improve farming practices.

He also informed that the Summer Internship Scheme of Nabard opens every year in summer and called upon the students of Mangalore University to avail the opportunity. “The Mangalore University can submit a proposal under the Nabard Chair Scheme to undertake research activities on contemporary topics with relevance to agriculture and rural development,” he suggested.

Prof M P Subramanian, former dean and chairman, Department of Commerce, in his inaugural address, expressed concern about the small land holdings of farmers and the need to have one single financial product to cater to all the needs of the farmers.

Mangalore University Vice Chancellor Prof P S Yadapadithaya mentioned about various measures to be taken to increase the investment credit for agricultural activities. He also favoured the transfer of technology from the laboratories to the farmers in order to enhance production and ensure food security.
