Mangaluru, Nov 21, 2015: The new building of the Bejai market was inaugurated on November 21, Saturday by DK District in-charge Minister B Ramanatha Rai and State Urban Development Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake.
The inaugural of the market building has pleased many who were subject to a great deal of inconvenience in the absence of a proper market building since the past ten years. If the original project is a six-floored structure, presently only three floors are complete.
In his address, Rai said a long standing demand of the people of the area has been fulfilled with the inaugural of the market building which took almost ten years for completion.
Citing various developmental projects initiated in Mangaluru, Rai said the city was also aiming to get included in the first list of 20 cities which would be selected for the Smart City Project.
Rai was also all praise for present MLA JR Lobo and present DC A. B. Ibrahim for their contributions towards the development of the city during their tenure as Commissioners in the past.
Vinay Kumar Sorake who also spoke lauded the MCC for making good ground work for the Smart City Project. The city would get Rs 1000 crore for five years if it is selected under the Project, he added.
The minister also stated that Central market as well as the Kadri and Kankanady markets will be developed.
JR Lobo, MLA of Mangaluru South in his address highlighted the several obstacles that came in the way of the construction of the market building. He said steps would be taken to allocate shops to the merchants at the earliest.
Ivan D’Souza, MLC also spoke on the occasion. Jacintha Vijay Alfred, Mayor of Mangaluru, Purushottam Chitrapur, Deputy Mayor, Ibrahim Kodijal, MUDA Chairman, Shashidhar Hegde, former mayor and others were present on the occasion.
On this occasion, MLA JR Lobo as well as corporators Prakash Salian and Lancelot Pinto were honoured on behalf of United Friends, Bejai.
Earlier two concrete roads and works of nine footpaths were inaugurated in various parts of the city.
