Advanced treatment now available for prostate cancer – Dr. Kumar Swamy

Mangalore, Oct 12, 2012: Radiation oncologist Dr. Kumar Swamy said that the prostate cancer is now on the rise, adding that advanced medical treatment is now available for this disorder.

Addressing reporters at a press conference organized by Health Care Global Enterprises Limited, a cancer care specialist, at Hotel Deepa Comfort on Oct 12, Friday, Dr. Swamy
spoke about the advancements in prostate cancer treatment.

While the testis of most prostate cancer patients used to be removed in the past, it is now preserved, he said. Speaking about the advantages of robotic radio surgery, he said that this treatment lasts 2 weeks while normal radiation therapy lasts 8 weeks.

Revealing further details on robotic radio surgery, he said that it can be combined with regular radio therapy. Modern radio surgery and radiation therapy have greatly reduced side effects, making things easier for prostate cancer patients and their families, he added.

Dr Radheshyam, consultant, Medical Oncologist, HCG said that ‘By modifying lifestyle and diet one can reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer. In the initial stages prostate cancer is asympyomatic and in most cases the patients present with symptoms where usually it is locally advanced or metastatic. This is potentially curable cancer if detected early. 


He also said that after 50 years of age, yearly PSA test is recommended and if anyone with a family history of this disease, they should start screening as early as from 35 years. Advancements in hormone therapy and chemotherapy has improved the survival rates of the patients and also the quality of life’.
