Academies to host literary, cultural meet

Mangalore, Oct 14, 2014: At a joint press meet here on October 13, Beary Academy President B A Mohammed Haneef said that  all language Academies, Authorities and Study peetas coming under the department of Kannada and Culture will jointly organise a convention, literary and cultural meet, in Mangalore either in April or May,  by Karnataka Tulu, Konkani, Kodava and Beary Academy Presidents.   Konkani Academy will take the lead in the convention.

 

 

 

 

There are 12 Academies in Karnataka, three book authorities and one study peeta. The Kodava, Tulu, Beary, Konkani and Arebhashe Academies will strive for harmony through literature in the region. The Academies will implement the cultural policy and government’s secular principles more effectively in the region.

He said the Academies will act as a cultural link between the society and the government. The government should involve the academies while preparing literary and cultural policy and hosting regional ‘samskrithika utsava.’ He welcomed Dakshina Kannada district administration for acknowledging the role of Tulu, Beary, Konkani and Arebhashe Academies in the Karavali Utsav in Mangalore. The district administration should also acknowledge the role of Kodava Samaja in Mangalore. All the five academies should be included while hosting Abbakka Utsava.  The five academies are also planning to organise cultural utsav in Madikeri, Sullia and Puttur region,  he said.

The Academy Presidents also urged the government to collect opinions while selecting names for Karnataka Rajyotsava award. The opinion of five academies in DK and Kodagu districts should be collected before announcing the names from the district for the award.

They said that the government releases Rs 65 lakh for the carrying out the programmes every year. The academies have been working towards the development of languages within the framework.  If the government increases the grant to Rs one crore, then academy can chalk out better programmes, they added.

Haneef said that the five academy presidents and members are committed to work in coordination. “Tulu, Beary, Konkani, Kodava, Arebhashe and other languages are part of this land. The languages have been uniting people and culture. The Academies will work towards keeping alive the culture of the land, he added.

Tulu Academy President Janaki Brahmavar, Konkani Academy President Roy S Castellino, Kodava Academy President Biddatanda S Thammaiah, Beary Academy Registrar Umarabba and Tulu Academy Registrar Chandrahas Rai were present.
