Puttur, Oct 14, 2015 : Several workers including Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and Udupi MP Shobha Karandlaje who were part of a team that was on a Padayatra froim Mangaluru to Yettinahole, were detained by the Hassan police on October 13, Tuesday night at around 8 pm when they reached the DK and Hassan border area and were near the Chowdeshwari Temple at Heggadde village. All of them were later released.
The Hassan District Additional SP Shobharani arrested the MPs and other party men after informing them that they cannot be allowed to enter Hassan district and would be arrested as a precautionary measure.
It has been gathered that such a move was taken as the presence of large number of activists who had planned to gherao the Yettinahole project site may create a law and order problem.
Sources said that MPs Nalin and Shobha questioned the police action of trying to disrupt a peaceful protest and engaged in a verabl duel with the cops. There also ensued a fracas between BJP workers and the police resulting in disruption of vehicular traffic and tense situation. Some party workers even sat on a dharna right on the road. The situation later cooled down.
Meanwhile, even 250 BJP workers from Hassan who too had planned to join the Padayatra were intercepted by the polcie near Donigal in Sakleshpur taluk and were arrested.
All the BJP leader and workers from the district who had participated in the Padayatra have returned to Mangaluru.
