Despite being a queen she used to visit the town like any ordinary woman and mingle freely with the masses. She fought the Portuguese with an army comprising soldiers from all faiths," said eminent writer Vaidehi.
She was speaking after inaugurating the two-day Abbakka Utsav- 2017-18 at Kolya under the aegis of the DK District Administration, Department of Kannada and Culture and Abbakka Utsav Samithi on February 3, Saturday.
Vaidehi further said it is not enough if Abbakka is remembered merely through a festival, the valour of Abbakka should be honoured through plays and songs in her memory, Vaidehi added.
Writer Roopa Iyer inaugurated different seminars while actress Bhavana Ramanna inaugurated the cultural event. State Minister for Food and Civil Supplies U T Khader hoisted the flag and presided over the function.
MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and Someshwar Gram Panchayat President Rajesh Uchil inaugurated the procession organised prior to the function.
Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil, Kannada and Culture Department Assistant Secretary Chandrahas Rai, District Information Officer Khader Shah, Ullal TMC President Kunhi Monu, Taluk Panchayat President Mohammad Monu and others were present.
