Abbakka Utsav begins on a grand note

Ullal, March 3, 2019: The two-day Veerarani Abbakka Utsav began on Ullal beach on Saturday on a grand note with a variety of events, such as a half marathon, a food festival, traditional fish catching, and cultural programmes.

The festival, which is being held for the first time on the beach, was formally inaugurated by district In-charge Minister U.T. Khader by flagging off the procession at 4 p.m. from the Bharath Secondary School, Ullal. As many as 13 teams of folk artistes took part in the procession.

Earlier in the morning, Mr. Khader flagged off the 21-km and 8-km run for boys and girls respectively from Abbakka Circle in Ullal.

As many as 300 boys and 53 girls participated in the marathon. The two runs culminated at the University Grounds in Konaje. Students from Alva’s College’s sports club took the first, second and third places in the two marathons.

Eight teams took part in the football tournament for students held at the Bharati Secondary School grounds. The team from Bharat Secondary School emerged as the winner.

Among the events that attracted people included throwball for women, swimming and traditional fish catching competitions.


Today’s Programs: Seminars and multi-lingual poetry seminars will be held from 8:30 am in the morning on Mar 3rd. In the evening, during the concluding programming at 5 pm, 2018-19 year’s Abbakka awards will be presented.   Minister U T Khader will be presiding over the programme in which minister D K Shivkumar will hand over the awards to the awardees. This year’s 2018-19 Abbakka award will be given to Dr Sandhya S Pai who is the managing editor of ‘Taranga’ and Urmila Ramesh, business woman.
