Mangaluru, Feb 18, 2017:  Airports Authority of India,  has approved construction of part parallel taxi track (Phase-II) for landing aircraft and grading of basic strip at south side of Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) at Kenjar. AAI has placed the work order with M/s P B I Construction Company for construction of this critical work at MIA. Total cost of the work amounts to Rs 98 crore. The total extension of taxiway track being built now is 1200 metre long.

Airport 1Taxiway is the stretch or the track connecting the runway with the apron (parking stand for aircraft) in the terminal building. Aircraft uses the taxiway for entry and exit from the parking stand to the runway. Phase-I taxi track of 1200m has already been completed and AAI is awaiting clearance from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to start operations on this taxiway, J T Radhakrishna, airport director, MIA said.

With the construction of parallel taxi-way, aircraft could move from the parking stand, wait in the additional taxiway and enter the runway for take-off immediately after the plane that has landed exits the runway. This additional taxiway particularly helps in the long run when the number of flights increases at the airport. It is operationally very important for flights movement on ground. The works are likely to be completed within 30 months. It will help in speeding up handling of air craft on the ground.
