Mangaluru, June 8,2017: It is widely reported that  former Kannada University Vice-Chancellor B.A. Vivek Rai has lamented that  there should not have been any discrimination as to big and small among languages in a democratic country such as India.

vivek rai.jHowever, great injustice is being caused to languages such as Tulu in the matter of its inclusion in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, which often act according to the whims of the political system. Either the government should spell out specific parameters for listing of a language in the Eighth Schedule or it should remove the Schedule altogether treating all languages equally, he said.

Prof. Rai speaking after inaugurating a two-week programme on social, cultural and literary dimensions of multi-language system under Global Initiative of Academic Networks (GIAN) of Union Ministry of Human Resources Development at the S.V. Parameshwara Bhatta Kannada Study Centre at Mangalore University here.

Resource person S.N. Sridhar from Stony Brook University, New York, said that people have been studying the Indian multi-lingual system through the eyes of the West. This is despite India having multi-lingual culture for over 3,500 years. One should understand the languages and culture from local parameters thereby solving several complex issues, he said.
