85% of textbooks supplied in DK

Mangaluru, June 01, 2018: This academic year, Dakshina Kannada is unlikely to face any shortage of textbooks. About 85% of the textbooks for primary and high schools have already reached the district.

The area DDPI  said there are 3,19,686 children pursuing studies up to Class 10 in the district. A total of 21.27 lakh textbooks are required in the district. A total of 11,93,856 textbooks have been distributed free of cost in government and aided schools, while 9,33,541 textbooks have been sold to the private schools.

He said the remaining textbooks will reach the district within three to four days and assured there will be no shortage of textbooks this year.

Tenders ;  He said the Textbook Society had invited tender, which were given to 8 to 10 publishers in the state to supply textbooks. The publishers are supplying the books to the respective taluks in the district. From the taluk, it is sent to the Cluster Resource Persons (CRPs) and the schools collect it from CRPs. There is one CRP for about 15 schools.

The unaided schools have collected the textbooks from the warehouses of the Department of Public Instruction directly.

In fact, the Department of Public Instruction had asked all the schools to place the indent for the textbooks online in the month of November itself. The Textbook Society had promised that if there was a need for additional textbooks in any taluk, the Society would supply it, he added.

Further, based on the direction of Shalini Rajaneesh, the principal secretary of Primary and Secondary Education, the DPI had decided to set up book banks in schools.

After the final exams, the textbooks were collected from students and stored in book banks in the schools, to be reused in the next academic year.
