7-day national-level chess tournament inaugurated in Mangalore

Mangalore, Jul 10: The 7-day 4th All India Open Fide Rated Chess Tournament organized by the South Kanara District Chess Association and United Karnataka Chess Association  was inaugurated at Subramanya Sabha on July 10, Saturday. More than 300 participants from 20 states are participating in this event.

MLA Yogish Bhat and MLC Captain Ganesh Karnik played about of chess to  symbolically inaugurate the competition.


Speaking on the occasion, Captain Karnik said that chess is losing its popularity with games such as cricket dominating the scene. Likening chess to life, MLA Yogish Bhat said that it is a beautiful game, which teaches defending and attacking and how opting for smaller things in life makes one lose the big things.

Managing Director of Karnataka Bank Jayaram Hande, who was one of the sponsors of the event, said that he would provide financial support for such activities in the future too.

Honorary President of SKDCA M. R. Vasudev launched the SKDCA website, designed by Rajesh Karkera, on the occasion.
