Udupi, Jan 10, 2019: As many as four monkeys were found dead in the forests near Shiroor and Hosangady in Udupi district on Wednesday.

monkey.jRohini, District Health and Family Welfare Officer, told The Hindu that the post-mortem had been done and the samples sent to the Viral Diagnostic Centre in Shivamogga. From Shivamogga, the samples would be sent to the National Institute of Virology, Pune, for tests. Of the deaths, two each were reported in forests near Shiroor and Hosangady villages.

In a span of one week, around six monkey deaths had been reported in the district.

More aware

But this might be because the people had become aware of it following reports of the Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD) in neighbouring Shivamogga district. So far there had been no positive or suspected cases of KFD in Udupi district, Dr. Rohini said.

Cases

Meanwhile, sources at the Kasturba Hospital in Manipal said here on Wednesday that a total of 57 patients, suspected with KFD, from in and around Sagar in Shivamogga district had been admitted to the hospital.

Of them, 19 had tested positive, and four had already got discharged. As many as 15 persons were taking treatment in the hospital and the rest were suspected cases. No death had been reported owing to KFD, sources said.
