3 Year jail sentence for bank safe room theft in 2009

Udupi, Aug 14, 2015  : The additional JMFC court here on August 13 sentenced a thief to three years in jail and imposed a penalty of Rs 10,000 for stealing from a bank in 2009.  Rishikesh from Ambalpady was arrested on charges of stealing Rs 82,093.50 from the strong room of KM Marg branch of Vijaya Bank on November 4, 2009.

 Rishikesh, an AC mechanic got the trust of the chief manager of Vijaya Bank branch that he was sent from the main office to attend to the air conditioner in the ATM booth. After repairing the AC, he went to the washroom to wash his hands, gained access into the strong room without anyone’s notice.

Hiding in a corner till the staff left at around 9 pm he opened the locked safe using a sharp-edged instrument. A sum of money from the cash box was taken too.  He could not get out of the locked room though and was stuck through the night.  The next morning, he was caught by officials and handed over to the police. A case was registered in the Udupi town police station.

The case was handled by PCI S V Girish. District and sessions judge V N Milan pronounced the judgment. The public prosecutor Mumtaz,  prosecutors Raju Pujari and Shanti Bai were the legal team.
