28th edition - Kankanady market gets face lift

Mangaluru, Nov 30, 2015:  The  28th edition of the Swachh Mangaluru campaign of the Ramakrishna Mission, in Kankanady market  on Nov 29 Sunday was another success.  Roof of the Kankanady flower market got a fresh coat of paint. Railings near the bus stop were painted too. The garbage piled up on the market premises was cleared.

Nearly 100 volunteers, including students from the School of Social Work and members of Chintana Group of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd., took part in the drive.

A team of volunteers led by journalist Mohammed Arif cleared the stones, sand and other debris dumped in the open space behind the Kankanady bus-stop. They climbed on the roof of the stalls of the flower market and gave it a fresh coat of paint. Removing the garbage dumped near the stalls, the volunteers painted its walls.

Another team of volunteers repainted the worn out road sign board indicating Kalpana Road. They also cut the weeds grown on the median opposite to Father Muller Hospital.

The volunteers removed posters pasted on the compound walls of the properties in the area and cleared garbage that had been dumped along the footpath in the area. Sunday’s drive was flagged off by president of Ramakrishna Mutt’s Mangaluru unit Swami Jitakamananda. NSS coordinator of Mangalore University Mohan Shinge and manager of HDFC Bank Prashanth Uparangala participated in the cleaning drive.
