2-day seminar on Rani Abbakka inaugurated

Mangalore, March 10: Mangalore University Vice Chancellor Prof. T. C. Shivashankar Murthy inaugurated a 2-day seminar titled “Abbakka Sankathana” on Rani Abbakka, the queen of Ullal, jointly organized by the Department of Kannada and Culture and the Ullala Veera Rani Abbakka Utsav Samithi in Ravindra Kalabhavan of University College on March 12.

In his inaugural address, he said that seminars and books will go a long way in enhancing understanding of the life and achievements of Rani Abbakka, who bears the credit of being the first freedom fighter of DK. She fought for 45 years and kept the Portuguese under control, achieving great fame in Spain as well as Arabian countries. He said that Abbakka is not only a social activist, but also a freedom fighter.


He also spoke of the importance of conducting seminars on several freedom fighters and national leaders hailing from DK, adding that the Mangalore University is willing to establish a regional study centre for this purpose.


MLA U. T. Khader, the honorary president of the samithi, said in his introductory address that the samithi is organizing this seminar to prepare a comprehensive documentary on the life and achievements of the queen.


Dr. Mukunda Prabhu, the historian, presided over the event. He spoke of the importance of constructing the Abbakka Hall and Theatre and celebrating Abbakka Utsav every year in this hall.


The chief guest of the event was Dr. K. N. Vijaya Prakash, the commissioner of the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC), and Dr. Gayathri Navada, the syndicate member of Hampi University.
