’Suvarna Arogya’ team to check school students health in DK

Mangalore, July 28, 2014: Chairing a review meet of the ’Suvarna Arogya’ Programme in his office DK DC A  B Ibrahim said,  A team of 16 doctors has been formed in order to carry out the health check-up of students from Class 1 to 10, studying in government, private and non-aided schools in the district, under Arogya Chaitanya Programme for the year 2014-15. 


dc ibrahim District Reproductive and Child Health Officer Dr Rukmini, who is in charge of the implementation of the programme, said that in the last year 2013-14, 97 per cent target has been achieved by conducting the health check-up of 3,13,007 out of 3,20,276 students. During the check-up, health related problems  were detected in 46,407 children and 10,066 children were treated in hospitals.


Also, students have been treated in 13,288 Primary Health Centres. A total of 1,702 students have been treated in the taluk level and 290 in the district-level, she said. Twelve children who needed specialised treatment were admitted to the hospitals which are linked with Yashaswini network. Surgery has been performed on 11 children who had serious health problems, Dr Rukmini said.

Most of the children of class 1 to 10 suffer from tooth related problems. It is found that 1 among 10, has problems of teeth. The DC directed the DDPI to carry out the tooth check up of schoolchildren and to create awareness among schoolchildren on oral health, with the cooperation of various toothpaste suppliers before Independence day.

DHO Dr Shivkumar said that iron tablets are being given to schoolchildren to prevent anaemia. The girl students between sixth and tenth standards are being provided a two pack sanitary napkins per month. These are supplied to schools as well as hostels, he said. DDPI Moses Jayashekhar said that in the district, there are 1,477 children who are deprived of education. An enrolment drive to bring back them has begun. It is expected that matters will get better soon.
