’Beach Run’ attracts huge response for awareness of better life

Mangaluru, Jan 16, 2017: Reports were enthusiastic about NITK, National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Alumni Association, hand in hand with the NITK Rotaract Club conducted their second annual beach run for NITK students, January 15 Sunday.

The run focused on and targeted improving health and fitness of today’s young India. It is a growing concern today that the younger generation is completely addicted to digital media and seldom come out of their habitats and take part in social/sporing activities. To create awareness on the importance of health and fitness, the NITK alumni association decided to host the Beach Run initiative for the students.


As per a count as many as 1,075 people, including students and faculty members of NIT-K, took part in a marathon to create awareness on a healthy lifestyle. The marathon was held in three separate formats: 3.3 km, 6 km and 10 km. All three began from the NITK beach gate and ended at the beach.

The 3.3 km run had the maximum of 1,000 participants, followed by 50 participants for the 6-km and 25 for the 10-km run. Dean (Academics) Katta Venkataramana flagged off the run at around 7 a.m. It was a joy to see at least 1,000 participants completing the 3.3 km run, said one of the organisers of the marathon.

 The NITK alumni association distributed prizes worth Rs 19,000 to the winners of the 10 km category, Rs 14,000 to the winners of the 6 km category and Rs 7000 to the winners of the 3.3 km category. T-shirts were also distributed to those who completed the beach run whereas refreshments were also provided at the end of the marathon to reinvigorate tired runners. The beach run route covered the NITK Beach and the NITK campus.

The marathon came to an end around 9 a.m. when a group of students presented a skit on beach schooling and other social initiatives that students have taken up.

It was stated that the success of the marathon has inspired the association to hold a similar event next year wherein more Mangalureans can take part.

To create awareness on the importance of health and fitness, the NITK alumni association decided to host the Beach Run initiative for the students.

As many as 1500 participants participated in the Beach Run and it was the first of its kind in such a large scale in Mangaluru. The program was flagged off at 6:45 AM at the entrance of the NITK Beach by the NITK alumni association members. The marathon also witnessed good participation from the NITK professors and the alumni.

The Beach Run had 3 categories- 10 km, 6 km and 3.3 km. Prizes were also distributed to the winners of the all the three categories after the event. The Beach Run will be kept open to the people of Mangaluru and not limited to the members of NITK.
