’ A unit of blood can save 3 people normally’ - Udupi DC

Udupi, Oct 10, 2019: Addressing the gathering after inaugurating the Voluntary Blood Donors Day, organised by the District Health and Family Welfare department in association with the District Blood Bank and the District AIDS Control and Prevention Unit at St Mary’s Aided ITI in Chitpadi on October 9,Wednesday. The Udupi DC,  G Jagadheesha said blood donation is a noble idea and act,  a unit of blood can save three lives in the normal course.

The DC said that one unit of blood can save three lives. “Men can donate blood once in three months and women once in six months. Every individual can donate blood as many as 240 times in his or her entire life span. It is essential for the youth to come forward and take up blood donation campaign in order to create awareness among others,” he added.

District Health Officer (DHO) Dr Ashok said that the district, by topping the list of districts with high voluntary blood donations, is a role model for other districts in state. “Although there are three blood banks in the district, the incidents of shortage of blood are not common,” he pointed out and added that there is a need to create awareness among students at village-level.

District Surgeon Dr Madhusudhan Nayak said that there is no alternative to blood. “Science has achieved revolutionary changes and development, but it has not been able to find a substitute for blood to save lives,”
