’Vijayotsava’ celebrated by Samithi for the approval to Kambala ordinance

Mangaluru, Jul 04, 2017 : ’Vijayotsava’ celebrated by District Kambala Samiti on Tuesday   to mark the promulgation of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Karnataka Amendment) Ordinance, 2017 as President Pranab Mukherjee recently gave assent to the ordinace.  Govenor Vajubhai Vala, which grants permission to conduct of kambala, the traditional slush track buffalo race in the coastal districts.

Samiti president Shantharama Shetty Barkur, expressing gratitude to the state government and elected representatives, said a major hurdle for holding Kambala has been cleared with the President giving his nod to the Ordinance.


Kambala is a 1,000-year-old traditional sport that is attached sentimentally to daivaradhane and nagaradhane of the region. In addition, it is the only sporting event in the region that transcends bias of the caste, religion and politics. People belonging to all sections of the society, rich or poor, participate in Kambala. The ban on Kambala was disappointing for thousands of fans in the region, he sai

Ashok Kumar Rai, legal action committee member of the samiti said since the ordinance has received the assent of the President, the same will be conveyed to the high court to get the stay on conducting Kambala vacated. We are happy that the President has approved the Ordinance. We have moved a memo in connection with this at the chief justice’s bench of the Karnataka HC. The matter is expected to be heard by HC on Wednesday," he said.


"This cruelty stands in contravention of the intention of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 and various articles of the Constitution of India. PETA India will challenge the Karnataka law that allows Kambala, in court" says Manilal Valliyate, expert veterinarian and CEO of PETA India.
