One way roads

The city roads were narrow and there was no scope of widening important road stretches. Hence the police was considering, among others, introduction of one-way movement on some busy roads, he said.

Among the road stretches under consideration included that between Bendoorwell Junction and Balmatta Circle, and so on.

The city police had introduced one-way movement on this stretch in July 2014 and withdrew few days later following complaints by the local councillor and few traders.

Commissioner Suresh said the city police was considering one way movement on busy roads that have alternative roads. He has sought survey of these roads from a team of traffic experts from Bengaluru and also from the National Institute of Technology, Karnataka. “We hope to make a decision in a month’s time,” he said.

CPC  Suresh said last week he had a meeting with Mangaluru City Corporation officials regarding problems namely encroachment of pavements, roads and parking spaces.

The narrow and ill maintained road from Hoige bazar railway gate to Rosario junction in in a bad condition for long.  Many heavy trucks from the Bundar Railway terminal use this stretch during day. The heavy traffic posses a serious danger to school, college children and senior citizens in this busy stretch.

The MCC has been asked to clear encroachment of parking spaces in 21 multi-storied buildings. Also, building materials and thrash on the sides of narrow roads poses serious issues.  Suresh said police and the MCC officials will jointly work to remove encroachment of pavements and roads. They have planned to remove some bus shelters blocking free flow of traffic.
