‘Create awareness about scientific disposal of garbage’

Mangaluru, Dec 20 2017: Speaking at the inauguration of the environment awareness programme under the theme ‘Our Environment Our Responsibility’ organised by Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM), Udupi DC Priyanka Mary Francis opined that there is a need to create extensive awareness over the scientific disposal of garbage.
DC said that only awareness can help to ensure that the district becomes garbage free. She added that the public should be aware of maintaining cleanliness in and around their own houses. “Every individual should make it their priority to keep their surrounding clean and hygienic, free of garbage.
“Burning of plastics and disposing the plastics unscientifically can cause diseases like cancer. Public should stop using plastic and use environmental friendly products. The district administration has taken up elaborate green initiatives. However, for the initiatives taken by the administration to be a success, they should be accompanied by the extensive awareness programmes,” she opined.
“The district is already credited with the acclaim of defecation free district. People in the district must strive to make the district garbage free district in the country,” she said.
Udupi diocese Bishop Dr Jerald Isaac Lobo said, “The world is our home and it is every individual’s responsibility to protect their planet. The increasing global warming is a threat as the water level is decreasing, which would prove disastrous on human kind in the near future. The air and water we breathe and consume is contaminated. Development measures are taken at the cost of destruction.”
He added that the massive collection of garbage has become a challenge to the mankind. “The only way out to protect our planet is to create awareness of the ill effects of the garbage collection. The present generation has a huge responsibility to conserve the nature and the planet for future generations. As many as 20,000 saplings are planted under Diocese area which is being nurtured,” he said.
He also added that he works extensively to create awareness on importance of growing forests. The Bishop stressed on the use of solar power to minimise pollution. “Simultaneously conserving water through percolation and judicial use would be helpful in future, the Bishop added.
The imbalance in the nature should be addressed by adopting environmental friendly measures.
He urged the people to pledge to not use plastics. He said the dreams of Mahatma Gandhi and Swacch Bharat Abhiyan initiated by the Prime Minister has to be realised. “Every individual should start cleanliness from their home itself. A ‘Swacch Bharat’ can be realised only when every individual joins hands to make the country clean and garbage free,” the Bishop said.
