‘Create H1N1 awareness in Udupi, prevent outbreaks’

Udupi, Feb 18, 2020 DHNS: There is a need to create awareness on H1N1 and precautionary measures are to be taken to prevent the outbreak of H1N1 in the district, said Deputy Commissioner G Jagadeesha.

He was speaking at a district-level coordination committee meeting at the DC’s office in Manipal on Monday.

District Surveillance Officer Dr Vasudeva Upadhyaya said that 421 H1N1 cases were reported in Udupi in 2019 and 10 persons had lost their lives. In the year 2020, till February, 55 cases have been reported and none have died. 

He said five cases of Japanese encephalitis have also been reported in the district. In addition, seven Chikungunya cases have been confirmed. Compared to last year, Malaria cases have declined this year.  There has been rise in Dengue cases across the state and Udupi has registered 25 cases so far.

“Contagious diseases are spread through mosquitoes. There is a need to destroy the source of mosquitoes,” Dr Prashanth Bhat, entomologist.

District Aids control officer Dr Chidananda Sanju said that Kyasanur forest disease (KFD) was transmitted to humans by infected ticks found on monkeys. People residing on the periphery of forests should be cautious.

Two KFD cases were confirmed in Udupi last year. This year, no case has been reported in the district. As many as eight persons suffering from KFD from other districts were admitted to KMC in Manipal.

Dr Vasudeva Upadhyaya said that water samples are being tested in the district. Water that can not be potable is purified. There are enough medicines for dog and snake bites in the district.

District surgeon Dr Madhusudhan Nayak, Women and Child Development Deputy Director R Sheshappa, DDPI Sheshashayana Karinja and others were present.
