Mangaluru, Jul 30, 2018 : ‘Nature is in, plastic is out’ – this is the resounding message we are hearing everywhere these days. With India taking the lead in Beat Plastic Pollution, the theme of 2018 World Environment Day, the cycling clubs and associations of four big towns of Karnataka decided to show their solidarity by pedaling all the way to Kudremukh on Sunday, 29th July 2018.

Led by WE R Cycling Mangalore, 87 members of various cycling associations of Mangalore, Udupi, Mysore and Chikamagaluru joined hands together to pledge their commitment to end single-use plastic, protect the environment and save the green coverage of our pride, the Western Ghats.

With support from Karnataka Forest Department (Karkala, Kudremukh & Mangalore regions), the enthusiastic youngsters came forward for an environment friendly bicycle ride in harmony with nature on Kudremukh road from Mala Ghat to Bhagavathi Nature Park. They pledged their support for the ride theme ’Eliminate plastic to preserve our forests’, ’Western Ghats - our treasure, our pride - Save & Protect’.

To make the ride interesting, a cycling competition was also held enroute for a stretch of 18km with average gradient of 5.5% and 1000m elevation gain. Lokesh Narasimhachar of Mysore finished the ride with an impressive timing of 1:01 hour followed by Srinidhi Urala from Udupi with a timing of 1:14 and Harivijay Kudva from Mangalore with a timing of 1:17.

During the lunch hours, medals received from Audax Club Parisian were distributed to the riders for having completed Brevet de Randonneure (BRM) in the previous season. While concluding, the riders and organisers wished for many more such events and hoped that "let our pledge turn into actions and our theme spiral into mass reactions".

An amazing endeavour for a worthwhile cause – only goes on to prove, when the youth make up their minds, nothing can stop them.
